CAT Theory
Considering the big picture, man
has not been around very long. Therefore we may
not be the best subject to study in reference to
fighting. I believe a better example can be found
in the domestic cat. Yes, that's right, the fur
ball lying at your feet. |
Edged
Weapons
Edged weapons have been used by
people for thousands of years to increase their
survival chances. These days it is no different.
Whether you were attacked by a caveman with a crude
knife back in those days or a crack head with a
screwdriver today, the angles of attack and the
mechanisms would be the same. |
Preparatory Movement
Probably many folks reading this
are current or former military, for those that are
not I will attempt explain Preparatory Command/
and Command of Execution. When you are marching
and the person calling cadence says something like
"Right" that is to alert you that prepare
you that a command is coming. When they say "Face"
that is the Command of Execution and when you hear
"Face" you turn "Right". |
The
Pistol Against the Spontaneous Attack
If you are browsing my site I
can assume that you are different then most people
these days. You take your personal security and
that of you friends and family very seriously. You
know that the mind, body and spirit must work together
effectively to fight off a human predator. You are
trying to gather information to enable you to blend
your system. |
Spyderco Rescue Knife for Self Defense
Recently I had the pleasure of
attending a one-day Tactical Knife & Stick Seminar
put on by Nick Hughes. During the knife part Nick
touched on something that I had been thinking about
a lot lately. That was the fact that if you are
forced to defend yourself with a knife it would
be much easier to defend your actions in court if
you were not wielding the Ninja Death Dealer 2000
Tactical Folder buy Killco. |
The Ground
As far as I know the only and
most popular school sponsored sport that pits man
against man is a quasi-combat arena is wrestling.
Today while training at the dojo I was working with
one of my favorite training partners Louis. Louis
is former active duty MP, now reservist and full
time Corrections Officer. |
The Stick
Another interest we have is self-defense.
Now don't get me wrong I love guns and knives, but
it is pretty hard to explain why you have knife
or gun in your hand while walking the dog. The hardest
part about self-defense is the need to draw they
gun or knife under combat stress. With a stick you
can have it in your hand. |
CQB
Pistol Panic Push
Whether we are talking about so
called “hip shooting” or “Speed
Rock” the situation being encountered is supposed
to be the same. That is you have your pistol holstered
and are face to face with a bad guy. When he attempts
to draw something you are supposed to push off/strike
the BG with your weak-hand, draw with your strong
hand and begin to shoot. This is laughable at best. |
Carry
VS Deployment
Seems that a lot of time is spent
discussing carry options for knives. Little time
is spent discussing deployment options. All deployment
options are carry options but not all carry options
are deployment options. |
Folder
into the Fight
I am in the process of getting
my lesson plan together for my Introduction to the
Tactical Folder seminar at the Chesapeake Show in
DEC. I had considered doing something about fixed
blades but decided against it due to fixed blades
being generally illegal for CCW here in the Peoples
Republic of Maryland. |
Are
You Training for Self Defense or to be a Bodyguard?
Most martial arts and combatives
training is for defending yourself. How often are
you by yourself? Most of this stuff is geared toward
the warrior on the battlefield or the cop on the
street. When we go to planned battle wives, children,
the weak and the infirm are left at home on purpose. |
Keep
the Light Moving
The majority of the time the tactical
use of the handheld light is discussed the emphasis
is on the ability of the light to blind the opponent.
The ability of a light to blind someone really counts
on three things, the power of the light, and the
preexisting ambient light of the environment and
most importantly the probability of the threat focusing
on the light. |
Knives
I See on the Street - LEO and Security Personnel
Awareness
Most of us know that edged weapons
are common enough with the criminal element of society.
Edged weapons are much more likely to be encountered
because of their availability and low or no cost.
Some of the edged weapons I see are the low end
commonly available street types with screwdrivers
and box cutters. |
Deadly
Force is Deadly Force
Police officers today have more
tools at their disposal than ever before. Tazers,
OC Spray, ASP Batons, and firearms are a few examples
of these. What do all of these weapons have in common?
The human hand deploys every one of them. |
Police
Defensive Tactics
Whether you work for a small municipality
or a large state agency somewhere along the way
you received some defensive tactics training. Make
no mistake that the #1 reason for that training
like all other things related to use of force was
to limit the liability of the agency. Not to protect
the line officer. |
Combative
Anatomy
Much study and argument revolves
around which Martial Arts or techniques are best
for self- defense. To know which are best we have
to look at it like we would to select a tool for
a specific job. What are we trying to accomplish?
In combatives that job is stopping a human being
from harming us as fast as possible. The first area
of study then needs to be anatomy or even more specialized
for our purposes, Combative Anatomy. |
Offensive
Defense for the Wounded Combatant
Kind of a wordy title for an article
I know, but I could not figure another way to put
it. I am not sure of the age demographics of the
folks that come to this website but if any information
can be obtained by e-mails, phone calls and the
folks who attend courses it would be safe to say
that there are few youngsters in the crowd. |
Accessing
/ Deployed / Attacking
For the sake of this article it
should be understood that the best defense against
an edged weapon attack is distance. Unfortunately
this is a luxury not afforded by many environments
and situations. |
Individual
Protection Program
Many people, especially those
here in the gun loving United States take for granted
that everyone can be armed with a firearm. They
forget about people in anti-gun states, countries
and not to mention non-permissive environments like
government buildings and transportation hubs like
airports. |
Bag
of Evil Contents Revealed
There are many forums, threads
and websites dedicated to building and using BOBs
AKA Bug out Bags. When BOBs come to mind I always
picture a huge expensive backpack loaded with lot
of expensive gear sealed in plastic with label attached.
The label reads, “Use only in case of severe
emergency” |
Office
Space Survival Volume #1
Most of the time our environments
can be narrowed down to four basic types, where
we live, in our vehicle, other transit and the workplace.
The concentration of this article is on workplace
survival. Primarily for those that work in an office
that like many are non permissive when it comes
to weapons and self defense. |
Root
of Excessive Force
When the majority of people think
about the role of police it conjures up thoughts
of peace keeping and protection, or at least it
should. And whom do they protect us from, who is
the traditional opponent of the police? The criminal
right? We are familiar with the phrases “fighting
crime” and “keeping the peace”.
The words fighting and keeping imply that some force
or effort is going to be needed to fight crime and
keep the peace. |
CAR/IPD
Course Review
My relationship with Paul Castle
and the Center Axis Relock System started 2002 when
David Williams a Robbery Homicide Detective from
Alabama was activated as part of the Tennessee Army
Reserves and sent to Aberdeen Proving Ground to
augment their security. Dave and I became fast friends
and he told me about this British policeman who
had come up with a new firearms system that I had
to see. |
Five
to Survive the First Five
In the the world of self defense
and preparedness I feel that too many people concentrate
on things that might come in handy instead of gear
that over time has proved its general effectiveness.
Several months ago on several forums I possessed
the question “what five items would you choose
to survive the first five minutes of a general emergency”. |
Which
Knives Work Best with the Mercharness
This is probably one of the most
common questions I get, so here it goes. The idea
of the mercharness is to be able to carry a proper
knife even when you do not have a belt on to support
a sheath. What does a proper knife mean for personal
protection? |
MCS
Doctrine as it Relates to Appendix Carry
MCS is concerned with continuity
of training from open hand-impact-edged weapons-firearms.
What I mean but that is we know that you will always
have your open hands and usually at least in improvised
impact weapon, then depending on your situation
an edged weapon or pistol. |
Musings
About the Defensive Use of the Pistol
The first thing you need to be
able to articulate for your defense is an immanent
physical threat. There are many ways to simulate
this on indoor and outdoor ranges. If the targets
are not mechanical then attach a line to them and
have a buddy yank on it moving the target. Teach
yourself to respond to the preparatory and execution
movements of someone drawing a weapon on you.

Edged Weapons - Good Guys vs Bad Guys
What separates the average offender from the average good guy? Their willingness to do violence. Criminals understand the value of intimidation and overwhelming violence. They also realize that if you have something in your hand that is only good for stabbing or cutting you better be fast and violent about doing either one before you are pulled off or attacked yourself. |
Evolution of Combative Anatomy
It has been just over a year since I coined the term Combative Anatomy, the study of incapacitating your attacker during a violent attack. Since that time I have done more research on the subject and have some new thoughts. |
