There is a lot of time spent discussing the perfect knife. Of course the first question and educated person asks themselves is “what do I plan on doing with it”. If the answer is “carry it everyday in case God forbid I ever need to depend on a knife to protect me from a during a violent attack” I think I found the answer with the Polkowski Bodyguard.

Other sage wisdom says the best knife is the one you have when you need it. That is one of the best attributes on the Bodyguard. At an over all length of around 8 inches and having lines that flow like the muscles of a large cat, the Bodyguard only had one edge on it, and that is the blade. This is a knife that you can put on everyday like you do your watch.

There is nothing special about the knife besides absolute simplicity. You can of course see the influence of the Japanese Katana. The upswept tip will pierce with ease. As all my carry knives it has not top guard allowing the Modified Philippino Grip as conceived by my friend and Blade Master Michael Janich.

If you are not familiar with this grip, it is acquired by putting your thumb far forward on the spine of the knife. This efficiently closes the space between the tips of your fingers and the base of your thumb lessening the chances of a dropped knife. The thumb on top also allows precise control of the blade. To further enhance this there is file work on the spine as well.

There are a lot of knife makers out there and I own blades from several of them. Many are in vehicles, BOBs or just in my collection. Seldom does a new knife make its way into my first line or EDC gear. The Bodyguard has done just that.

After taking delivery of the Bodyguard from my “Dad” Al Polkowski at the New York Show I put it on a mercharness and carried it at length that weekend. While traveling for the holidays I use another sheath supplied to me by Al and put the Bodyguard on a Tactical Tether and wore in the appendix carry position IWB. Even after driving for several hours the Bodyguard remained comfortable and accessible.

Any of Al Polkowski's Knives would be a bargain at several hundred dollars above what he charges. If you are interested in a great EDC fixed blade look into the Bodyguard.
